Greenboro - Contract Cleaning and Gardening            

Greenboro’s business is contract cleaning; it was set up by the Charity, with the support of Reading Borough Council, in 1990 and its profits are covenanted to the Trust. It operates mainly within a 20 mile radius of Caversham and offers a gardening maintenance service too.

Traditionally Greenboro’s main business contracts have been with housing associations and county councils, for example, The Guinness Trust, and with local businesses and community projects, for example, Phoenix Foods, Drug & Alcohol Abuse Advisory Bodies Centre.

Greenboro is best classed as a social enterprise, which the government defines as, ‘businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.’ Social enterprises are businesses driven by a social or environmental purpose. There are 62,000 of them in the UK, contributing over £24 billion to the economy, employing approximately 800,000 people (2005-2007 data from the Annual Survey of Small Business UK).

Greenboro was originally set up as a limited company and a Social Firm. It was incorporated in 1990 and was the first Social Firm in Britain. A Social Firm is a business created for the employment of people with a disability or other disadvantage in the labour market. A significant number of its employees will be people with a disability or other disadvantage, and every worker is paid a salary appropriate to the work whatever their productive capacity. Work opportunities are equal and all employees have the same employment rights.

Greenboro is proud to continue to offer work experience to adults with employment support needs - a stepping-stone for those who want to progress into open or unsupported employment.

Greenboro specialise in cleaning for property management companies, local councils, and housing associations, as well as businesses, for example, communal areas, offices, toilets, internal and external stairwells and balconies. We also undertake carpet cleaning and jet washing outside areas, and carry out end of tenancy flat cleans and end of build cleans. We do not clean privately occupied and domestic properties.
