Annual Social Moth Trapping Event

A leopard moth

On the night of Friday 29 July 2011 three light traps were used to catch moths around the Greenshoots site.  During the preceding week the weather was variable, but on the night the conditions were optimum.  More than 400 moths of 95 species were recorded, many of them resident on the site.

Among the highlights were specimens of Elephant Hawkmoth, Small Elephant Hawkmoth, Pine Hawkmoth and a Lobster moth, even though the Hawkmoth season was almost over for 2011.  Two species were found which had practical interest for Greenshoots. The first was a Leopard moth whose larvae feed on wood inside the trunks of apple trees.  The second was a Leek moth.  This is a tiny moth whose larvae feed on leeks and all kinds of onions.  Until recently this moth was confined to the South coast, and it was sufficiently rare to have been given Red Data Book status.  Recently it has been spreading, probably in response to climate change.

The Greenshoots staff and their families and friends who came to the event joined in with a will after being fortified with light refreshments.  The social event finished at about midnight and the moths were then left in peace to find their way to the traps for the remainder of the night.

Greenshoots - Saturday opening

Greenshoots recently extended their normal weekday opening hours of 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday to include Saturdays from 28th May to 25th June for customers to buy bedding plants, hanging baskets and tubs.

This proved to be very successful.

 Family Fun Day

On Saturday 21st May 2011 Ways & Means held their Family Fun Day at Greenshoots Garden Nursery in Rotherfield Peppard with lots of attractions including the Canine Capers Fun Dog Show, bedding plants for sale, a silent auction, charity raffle, bouncy castle, cream teas and homemade cakes.
